Long night early start northwards to Waitangi near the treaty site about 70 km away. Opted for the scenic route along the coast as much as possible which took us about 5 hours including a ferry ride and a stop at an impressive art studio and cafe for morning coffee. North east gales and heavy rain forecast for today but is was only when we arrived at the camp site that the rain materialised, though the gales were rocking th van all the way. The plan for tomorrow is to retrace our steps southbound but sticking to the major roads and hopefully do a little over 300 km to a new area - the Coromandel peninsula. Blowing a gale and we are right on the shore so the planned walk looks unlikely.
