Aukland day six Wednesday 12/10/11

Early morning (well 9am) departure for Coramandel peninsula. Rainy drive some long straight level roads for a change then past Thames we had a narrow road clinging to the edge of the water. Had to stop for quite a while for a film crew to do whatever they were doing - presumably they didn't want modern traffic in the background. Stopped for morning coffee overlooking a nice bay right on the edge of the sea. Onwards to Coromandel town where we parked up and wandered along the main street looking at art galleries and gift shops. Found a nice bread shop and back to the van for lunch in the rain. Moving on we retraced our steps to the 309 road and set off on the gravel track across the peninsula as the rain stopped. Past a 'squatter' style pig farm, mini waterfall and kauri tree grove. More interesting twisty road led us to Whitianga where we randomly chose a camp site - maybe not the best decision. Wandered into town for a dinner and found it pretty dead. Squids seemed the best bet with local shellfish on offer. Two moules (enormous ones) and garlic bread plus naughty deserts later we emerged into light rain for the walk back. Freddie very worried about us eating with our feet on the ceiling but knitknit reassured him we were managing ok.  Decided to ignore the windscreen and car to airport plan and move on to Miranda which is much closer to the airport for the handover on Friday, mainly as the site was so scruffy and penny pinching.
